Our Schools' Issues

Leadership and Accountability
With the varied challenges and uncertainties currently afflicting our youth and education system, it is critical to elect leaders who will strive to achieve solutions without overlooking any segments of our diverse student population.
Upholding an environment that develops our youth's talents and potential into budding and successful careers is also of utmost importance. Officials tasked with the responsibility for the educational well being of our students must implement programs that will provide the needed guidance and direction for every student. Essentially, all efforts must be made to bring up a generation of promising individuals with fulfilling careers, who in turn will play an integral role in the vitality of the city and its economy.

Safety
Safety is an issue that has not been properly addressed in our schools, particularly pedestrian and traffic safety around our schools. School board members are obliged to evaluate current safety policies and initiate strategies to keep our campuses safe. There needs to be a comprehensive risk assessment of all schools in order to devise a thoughtful approach that will have a real impact. Waiting for tragedies to occur before such measures are taken is unacceptable. Elected leaders and school management must act with a great sense of urgency and not wait for elections to lead the charge. Safety must be a cornerstone issue every single day in our schools and be a top priority working with elected leaders, administrators, teachers, parents, students and community organizations.

Parent Involvement/ Parent & Student Orientation
The most rewarding investment we, as a community, could make, is in our youth. The quality of their future is directly related to the efforts made by parents and educators. While some parents may desire to actively participate in their children's academic lives, one of the most prevalent problems is the language barrier and the lack of knowledge about the school system. This is why the initial orientation process for families new to the school system is critical to the overall academic success of students.
Elected officials must set forth programs for immigrant parents who may not understand the language well. This will allow immigrant families to better understand what steps their children need to take in order to successfully graduate from high school and be accepted to college. By helping all students we can have our schools' parent-bodies reflect our city's diverse make-up, and improve our students' performance in the process.

Community Outreach
When community involvement is encouraged, schools enjoy an enriched environment. It is because of these overwhelming benefits that schools must initiate efforts that will promote community involvement on both individual and organizational levels. Being intertwined with the city's various all-encompassing efforts will inject a new sense of energy and purpose in the schools' staff, student body and the overall Glendale community.

Staff Diversity/Cultural Sensitivity
We live in a city with a quintessentially American characteristic: A diverse melting pot of different cultures. This rich cultural fusion must be reflected within the staff of our school district, ranging from entry level positions all the way to management. Doing so, will help further nurture our city's diversity, keep us in tune with the cultural dynamics of our city and promote cultural sensitivity.

Student Profiling/ Student Statistics
With a student population as diverse as ours, we face academic challenges that are, in a sense, unique from one group of students to another. Because specific and varied challenges call for targeted solutions, we need comprehensive information broken down into narrower categories including student performance and background.
Accurate and up-to-date data regarding the student-body's performance is a critical tool that we cannot afford to disregard. By pinpointing the specific type of assistance needed, the schools can provide tailored solutions meant to address those very problems. Such data will enable the school district to provide bold, deliberate and specialized assistance that will empower students to succeed in their academic lives.
