Our Glendale Community College's Issues
Leadership and Accountability Whether attending school for personal growth and fulfillment, or laying the academic foundations before embarking on an education experience at a four-year university, Community Colleges are the gateway for each student and his or her particular needs. This is why it is critical to elect leaders who will achieve solutions without overlooking segments of our diverse student population. Upholding standards that hone our students' skills in preparation for their particular professional field of study is of utmost importance. Thus, individuals set to lead our students must provide the needed guidance, direction and tools. Essentially, efforts must be made to ensure that we are able to teach, train, and prepare promising individuals with fulfilling careers that will improve their personal lives and increase their value as residents of Glendale and members of our community at large. Elected members of the Board of Trustees have the unique ability to set the right tone and direction of the college so that the college plays a maximum role improving the education of Glendale residents, both young and older. Student Programs Without robust programs to guide, aid, and academically prepare students, community colleges would be ineffective. These programs need to cover a range of different issues - from helping students with financial aid, providing workshops meant to assist in overcoming language barriers, enriching campus life, to creating an environment where students can apply the theoretical skills they learn in class to practical use. The available programs must be comprehensive and supplement the classes that students are enrolled in. Staff Diversity/Cultural Sensitivity We live in a city with a quintessentially American characteristic: A diverse melting pot with a medley of different cultures. This rich cultural fusion must be reflected within the staff of our city's varied establishments; ranging from entry level positions all the way to management. Doing so, will help further nurture our city's diversity, keep us in tune with the cultural dynamics of our city and promote cultural sensitivity. Garfield Campus Because it is never too late to go back to school and better oneself through education, we need to continue to invest in Glendale Community College's Garfield Campus. The campus is specialized in helping citizens resume their studies, or attend for the first time, in a friendly setting. The campus can also be geared to cater to adults in Vocational training and language courses. The Garfield campus will play a special role by ensuring the college provides opportunities for underserved areas of Glendale. Student Statistics With a diverse student population, we face academic challenges that are, in a sense unique from one group of students to another. Because challenges call for targeted solutions, we need comprehensive information broken down into narrower categories including student performance and background. Accurate and up-to-date data regarding the student-body's performance is a critical tool that we cannot afford to disregard. By pinpointing the specific type of assistance needed, the college can provide tailored solutions meant to address those needs. Such data will enable the college to provide bold assistance that will empower students to succeed in their academic lives. |
