Our City Council's Issues

Leadership and Accountability
With the various challenges and uncertainties currently facing our city, it is critical to elect leaders who will strive to achieve solutions that address the needs of all parts of our diverse city. Our city's greatest asset is its rich diversity, but to harness that strength requires us to respect the variety of cultures all of who share the same cherished American values.
As citizens, we all have a right to expect the leadership of our city to set the right tone of respect toward each other and to lead the city with high standards of integrity. That is why transparency with our local elected officials is of utmost importance. Citizens should have open access to our officials and city staff and they should make a sincere effort to listen to the different voices prior to making choices so that informed decisions are made. This will ensure that our elected officials will be accountable for making choices in the best interests of everyone.

Community Outreach
As citizens of Glendale, we are fortunate to have resources, city departments and institutions that are there to serve and assist us in meeting a variety of needs. However, it is important to uphold a standard that ensures that these establishments are practical, accessible, and strive to accommodate all segments of the population through appropriate outreach.
Our institutions and municipal departments must maintain an environment that is welcoming for visitors and an intuitive and easy process to follow, By striving to minimize barriers our city departments will become more effective and productive and provide more citizens with the assistance needed.

Budget/Finances
The City of Glendale has been the capital of many financial institutions for the past decade. Major corporations such as Nestle and Bank of America have looked upon Glendale as an anchor location, elevating the financial status of the city. But one of the greatest sources of financial strength is the diverse group of many small businesses who call Glendale home and who contribute to the city's tax base.
However, despite this solid financial foundation, in the current economic environment the City of Glendale needs to conduct a comprehensive review of its annual budget and realign it with today's economic realities. Anywhere you turn in the private sector, the days of unchecked spending are over. Our city government needs to follow suit and by tightening its belt by reevaluation all sources of expenditures, including salaries.

Safety
Knowing we have one of the safest cities in the state certainly brings comfort to us all. Nevertheless, there is need for improvement. Pedestrian and traffic safety is a core issue that we cannot ignore. Elected leaders must step up to the plate and work together to make a real difference with this life and death issue. Politics needs to be set aside giving way to a sense of urgency to strike true cooperation between the city's safety institutions, elected leaders, community groups and schools so that we can see progress.

Staff Diversity/Cultural Sensitivity
We live in a city with a quintessentially American characteristic: A diverse melting pot of different cultures. This rich cultural fusion must be reflected within the staff of our city's establishments; ranging from entry level positions all the way to management. Doing so, will help build ownership in the future of our city and further nurture racial harmony by promoting cultural sensitivity. Elected leaders have a unique responsibility to ensure equal opportunity and to promote the value of respect for all citizens.

Housing/Development
As the economy worsens, families are being forced to move out of Glendale. It is essential to take steps to assist families to provide affordable housing so that more families can achieve their American Dream.
Equal attention and effort must be put towards providing accessible homes, and business friendly environment. Attracting more businesses will help create more jobs that will sustain Glendale's economy and maintain our city's quality of life.

Parks/Arts
It is clear that our city does not have enough parks for our citizens, especially in the places where they are needed the most. Our elected leaders must pay attention to this issue as a path toward building better community. With falling real estate prices, this is a unique moment that must be seized to acquire open space in underserved part of our city.
Our city also has a very large gap in adequate arts and cultural life in the City. Promoting and encouraging arts will enrich our citizens' lives and sense of culture, while providing everyone with an uplifting and stimulating environment. Elected leaders must look for creative solutions to attracting and encouraging arts in our community.
