Six ANCG-PAC Candidates Secure Win in Glendale City Elections
GLENDALE, CA - After four months of interviews, meetings with community organizations and an intense get out the vote effort, Glendale voters on Tuesday elected six of the nine Armenian National Committee Glendale-Political Action Committee's endorsed candidates for various public offices. With all 57 precincts reporting Tuesday night, ANCG PAC endorsed candidate, Ara Najarian, was re-elected to the City Council, while incumbent Bob Yousefian came in fourth. Laura Friedman and incumbent Frank Quintero also secured their bid for the remaining 2 City Council seats.
"The Armenian-American community's vote was split by too many candidates who never had a chance of winning," stated ANCG-PAC chairman Zanku Armenian. "The ANCG-PAC had multiple discussions with each of these candidates in the beginning of the process and made them fully aware that their campaigns had no chance because of their lack of qualifications," added Armenian. "The motives of several of these city council candidates and their ties to other incumbent candidates is highly suspect. By running they put their personal interests ahead of the community's interest by virtue of their untenable candidacies. We hope the community has come away with some learnings from this experience," stated ANCG PAC Board member, Zareh Sinanyan. In the City Clerk race Ardashes (Ardy) Kassakhian, who was running unopposed, was reelected with 12,406 votes.
The race for City Treasurer is still too close to call. Over 2,000 provisional and late absentee ballots still need to be counted, which is more than Ron Borucki's lead over ANCG PAC endorsed candidate Rafi Manoukian. The final tally is expected this week at which time this race will be called. In the Glendale Unified School District race, ANCG-PAC-endorsed candidate Christine Walters succeeded incumbent Chakib Sambar. A very organized and positive campaign conducted by candidate Eric Sahakian fell short of garnering the needed votes to win, despite Sahakian's maturity and vastly superior experience in the field of education compared to other candidates. "I am very humbled and excited about the success of this campaign. I am very appreciative of the support of the ANCG PAC and I am looking forward to working together to address the important issues facing our local schools," stated ANCG-PAC endorsed candidate Christine Walters. "With Christine Walters added to the new school board, the ANC intends to work with the board to address many pressing issues impacting students and parents. It is the ANC's intention to be very active and visible on these school issues in the months ahead," stated ANCG PAC Board member, Armen Abrahamian.
With respect to the GCC Board of Trustees race, all of the ANCG-PAC-endorsed candidates including incumbents Armine Hacopian, Anita Quinonez-Gabrielian and former GCC instructor and administrator, Ann Ransford swept the polls bringing in record votes. "The ANC will be working closely with the full GCC board to build a closer bond and collaboration between GCC and the Armenian American community so that the full potential of the college may be reached," noted ANCG PAC board member, Sarkis Ourfalian. ANCG-PAC is a non-partisan political organization, committed to promoting civic engagement and is active in a wide variety of activities including: voter registration, voter education, grassroots mobilization and endorsement of candidates seeking office in the City of Glendale. |
